IPod News 08.24.12 ? Woods Learning Center

What a delightful start to a new school year. We are coming together as a new community as old friends find each other and new friends are made. We are delighted to welcome three new students to the Intermediate Pod. As comfort levels grow, we will get to know about them.

In your Friday Folder you will find a spiral labeled ?Journal.? Students will use this spiral to write a weekly letter. One week they will write a letter to someone at home. We are asking ? nay pleading with ? that person to respond to the letter and return it the following Monday. On alternate weeks, students will write to someone in class.

Things are coming together nicely for our groups this fall. We will start the year with six spelling groups. Students will take a pre-test Mon-day mornings at 8:15, and take tests on Fridays at 8:15. If you are interested in helping with spelling, please let us know. Students will have their first pre-test August 24.

From Timbree Clark:

Hello! I am so excited to be at Woods Learning Center! It has been a pleasure meeting all of the students and families. I recently graduated from the University of Wyoming at Casper College with my degree in Elementary Education and an Endorsement in Early Childhood Education. I grew up in Worland, Wyoming on the family farm that my dad runs, so I grew up with a love for animals and nature. When I?m not at school, I enjoy watching baseball, camping, fishing, and hiking. I know that we are going to have a great year in the Intermediate Pod! If you have any questions at all please do not hesitate to call, email, or stop by and see me. ?Timbree Clark

If you are interested in helping us as a driver for future field trips, please remember to give the front office copies of your drivers license and proof of insurance. We are making arrangements to attend the Game and Fish Expo at the Events Center on September 14 and will be looking for volunteers to help. Thanks.

Ms. Clark?s math group is working on place value of tens and ones. Students are using unifix cubes to practice adding and subtracting two-digit numbers. They will continue to work on adding and subtracting two-digit numbers throughout the unit, and will also be introduced to the place value of hundreds.

Mr. Sallade?s math group was introduced to the?commutative?property of addition. Students have put locking?cubes together in different combinations and have found the answer is constant. Students also used pattern blocks to cover a given shape. They found that arranging the pattern blocks in different ways didn?t change their ability to cover the shape. WLC?s school-wide theme this year is Wyoming. As the year progresses we will be calling on you to help us out with Wyoming stories, photos and other ?skills? (we call that a teaser) to share with our class. If you have any ideas or thoughts centered on Wyoming, please visit with us.
