Sofia Vergara not planning wedding

Sofia Vergara is too busy to plan her wedding.

The 40-year-old actress has confirmed recent speculation that she and partner Nick Loeb got engaged on a recent holiday to celebrate her birthday but she insists she is in no hurry to wed as she is tied up with her commitments to 'Modern Family'.

She told Celebuzz: ''I haven't started planning anything because everything has been very recent.

''I am kind of, you know, working a lot - I just started the 'Modern Family' season - so I don't know yet [when I will get married]. No plans.''

Sofia and Nick, 36, were joined by around 90 friends - including 'Modern Family' stars Julie Bowen, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Sarah Hyland - for the birthday trip to the Mayan ruins in Chichen Itza, Mexico, and the brunette beauty had a wonderful time.

She said: ''It was amazing!''

Sofia - who has 20-year-old son Manolo with first husband Joe Gonzalez - also admitted she is thinking of starting a family with Nick.

The actress - whose 'Modern family' character Gloria is pregnant - said: ''It's something that maybe one day I'll do again. I wouldn't mind...

''I mean, I think I can still do it. But you know, when you want to do something like that, you want to do it right, at the right moment, so I am taking it easy, so maybe when I have a little less work.''

A Rock Climbing Adventure in Boulder, Colorado | Alister & Paine

Forearms pumping. Legs jackhammer. A step in the wind and a toe hold. Chalk up. Surprise summit. Feel the gravel in your toes and the sweat on your fingertips. See the world fall away beneath you and open your heart to the sky. This is the passion, the lust, the pure adrenaline that defines rock climbing. An addicting, life-threatening, power pumping niche sport that cultivates a community of incredibly dedicated athletes and adventurous souls.

?There are only 3 real sports: bull-fighting, car racing and mountain climbing. All the others are mere games.? ? Hemingway

Where better to get into this intense sport than Boulder, Colorado? With world class mountains and everything available from classic beginner routes to kick-ass 5.11 climbs, it?s the perfect place to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. The Colorado Mountain School is the go to school in the area?they have dominated the industry since 1877 and have been Rocky Mountain National Park?s exclusive technical climbing concessionaire since the Park?s creation in 1915.

Climbing is about fun and adventure, and no place tops Boulder?s backyard for its incredible variety of world-class climbing: Boulder Canyon, Eldorado Canyon and Rocky Mountain National Park. These are places where the outdoors is still king, the sky is open and blue, and classic climbs abound.

These are the places where climbers have long sought something beyond the ordinary, something deeper. You?ve got to dig a little, go around the next bend, to find the greatest gems. They don?t jump out at you, but they?re there for you to discover, to climb and enjoy. Isn?t discovery the whole point of the journey?

Colorado Mountain School is the largest guide service in Colorado and has more AMGA and International Federation of Mountain Guides Association certified guides than any other guide service in the state. They are the exclusive climbing concessionaire for Rocky Mountain National Park and have developed the most complete outdoor climbing curriculum in the United States. You can do everything from Intro Rock Climbing, Big Wall Clinic to Intermediate Techniques Seminars or a custom day out with your own personal climbing guide. A custom day out with one of their bad ass guides can be anything from super easy to ultra desperate. It just depends what you?re body and brain can handle that day.

We stole Joey for a day and headed to Eldorado Canyon for a classic 5.5 beginner?s route aptly named Swanson?s Arete (technically named for Colorado native Jon Swanson, but Ron Swanson also seems an appropriate namesake).

Dirty chimneys, new techniques, graceful moves and a guide who inspired self-assurance and confidence the entire day made it the experience of a lifetime. You certainly don?t want to slip and weight the rope, but knowing that if you do, a guide like Joey has your back just makes you all the more sure of yourself and your abilities. A pre-climb interview is conducted at the school, and your guide will get a feel for your climbing level, indoors and/or outdoors to figure out the best route to take you on.

There so much more to climbing in Colorado than summiting a mountain; there?s a spirit of the West, a culture that values recreation, takes its time and considers what you have to say. Here things are fresh. Guides are professional yet passionate, and natural climbing lines remain free.

Climbers have always felt at home here. Yosemite pioneer Tom Frost wrote back in 1977: ?Colorado?s cliffs, located on the spine of the continent, have become the crossroads of American climbing. It is felt by many that Colorado is the subculture center of the climbing community; where climbing is a more serious way of life, and lived more fully by sizeable numbers of participants, than at any other place in the nation.? You?ll feel welcome too.

(AP) ? Two Russian businessmen rose to riches together in the chaotic years of post-Soviet Russia and then became archenemies ? and a British judge will soon rule on which oligarch will defeat the other in a multibillion-dollar court battle.

After a seven-month delay, Judge Elizabeth Gloster is expect to deliver a summary ruling Friday to settle the legal feud between Roman Abramovich, the billionaire Chelsea Football Club owner, and self-exiled tycoon Boris Berezovsky.

The feud, the most high-profile commercial case at London's High Court in recent years, has fascinated the British and Russian media with intriguing tales about the tycoons' jet-setting lives and the lawless Wild West years that followed the 1991 breakup of the Soviet Union.

Berezovsky, 66, is a former Kremlin power broker who fled to Britain after falling out with President Vladimir Putin. He sued the 45-year-old Abramovich, who he calls his former friend, prot?g? and business partner, alleging that Abramovich threatened him into selling his stakes in the Russian oil giant Sibneft vastly beneath their value. Berezovsky alleged blackmail and breach of contract ? and is seeking more than 3 billion pounds ($4.8 billion) in damages.

Abramovich has denied the allegations and his lawyer has accused Berezovsky of lying and making up stories.

"I'm an optimistic person, it's in my genes. So, of course, I'm confident that the judgment will go my way," Berezovsky said ahead of the ruling.

Abramovich's lawyers did not immediately respond to calls seeking comment.

Both tycoons were cross-examined and sat across from each other on most days during the four-month trial, which attracted large crowds of journalists, lawyers and spectators.

The case has sparked so much interest partly because of its focus on the two oligarchs' personal, as well as business, relationship. They were said to have become friends after meeting on a private cruise in the Caribbean, built a business empire together, but parted bitterly when their fortunes were reversed.

Berezovsky, a mathematician-turned-Mercedes dealer, amassed his wealth during Russia's privatization of state assets in the early 1990s. In return for backing former Russian President Boris Yeltsin, he gained powerful political connections and access to valuable assets at very low prices.

Berezovsky says he mentored the younger Abramovich, treated him like a son, and founded Sibneft with him and a third partner. Berezovsky claimed that the friendship faltered when he fell out with Putin, at which point Abramovich "intimidated" him into selling his Sibneft shares ? causing him losses of almost $6 billion.

In separate claims, Berezovsky also alleged breach of trust and breach of contract when Abramovich sold Berezovsky's alleged stake in aluminum conglomerate Rusal without his consent.

Abramovich claims that Berezovsky was not his mentor and never owned the stakes ? in fact, he argued that Berezovsky only had a political role in creating Sibneft and never "contributed a single cent" to acquiring or building up the company.

According to Abramovich, he had already paid more than $2.5 billion to Berezovsky for his services as his "political godfather" ? a protector whose political influence helped him do business ? and reluctantly funded Berezovsky's extravagant lifestyle of yachts and vacation homes because he feared retaliation. He doesn't owe Berezovsky any more money, he said.

"Our business relationship was over and yet he still treated me as his 'cash cow' and expected me to fund all of his expenses," Abramovich claimed in a statement. He described Berezovsky as ambitious, sometimes megalomaniacal, and a man who "would often start believing his own PR."

Charged in Russia with fraud and embezzlement, Berezovsky has been living in London since 2001.

Abramovich lives in Russia and is known to some as the "stealth oligarch" because of his low profile, but is widely known in Britain since he bought the Chelsea soccer club in 2003. His wealth is estimated to be 9.5 billion pounds (about $15 billion) by The Sunday Times.

The pair's feud is just one among many lucrative commercial fraud cases dealing with Russia and Central Asia that have found their way into London courts. Lawyers say many wealthy Russians distrust the legal infrastructure in their own country and flock to English courtrooms because they believe they can find fairness there.

Friday's summary verdict will be followed soon after by an extended judgment and lawyers from both sides will meet in the next few weeks to discuss appeals and legal costs.

New life for decades-old Wis. cheddar blocks

MILWAUKEE (AP) ? A recently discovered block of eastern Wisconsin cheddar cheese that dates back to the Nixon presidency will be sold for $10 per ounce.

Edward Zahn, 73, was in Z's Cheese Shoppe's walk-in cooler last month, preparing to shut down his Oconto store. He pushed aside stacks of cheese to reveal several wooden boxes that had been overlooked for years.

Inside were blocks of unintentionally aged cheddar ? 28, 34 and 40 years old ? that, some experts say, might comprise the oldest collection of cheese ever assembled and sold to the public.

"It just got overlooked," Zahn told the Wisconsin State Journal of the 40-year-old cheese. "It looks just like the others except it's just a lot sharper. It's got character."

Ken McNulty, who owns the Wisconsin Cheese Mart in Milwaukee, bought about 20 pounds of the 40-year-old cheddar and 120 pounds of 34-year cheddar. He declined to reveal the price he paid.

Cheese is often sold by the pound, but McNulty plans to sell the oldest cheese by the ounce so more people can get a taste.

"Because there's so little, we didn't want to sell blocks of it on the Web," he told The Associated Press. "We just wanted people to sample it."

He said an ounce would be just enough for two people to nibble on. He suggests sampling the vintage cheese by itself, not with a cracker or other food that would compete with the flavor.

He said he found out about the cheese when Zahn's son called, told him his father was closing up shop and offered to sell some inventory. McNulty, long a fan of Zahn's cheesemaking expertise, said he wanted everything.

McNulty sampled the 40-year-old and 28-year-old blocks, pleasantly surprised that the milk in the cheese hadn't soured. He still hasn't tried the 34-year-old cheese, and acknowledges that he can't assume it will be edible. He plans to cut it open on Oct. 6 as part of a cheese-tasting event at his store.

Wisconsin, the nation's leading cheese producer, last made headlines for aged cheese in 2010 when Tony Hook, the co-owner of Hook's Cheese Co. in Mineral Point, sold 1,600 pounds of 15-year-old cheese for $50 per pound. Cheese connoisseurs described that cheddar as mature, rich, smooth and decadent.

So what does cheddar taste like when it's been sitting around since 1972, the year "The Godfather" was released and when gas was 55 cents per gallon?

"If you get a piece close to the outside, it's all crystallization, so it's crunchy like Corn Flakes," McNulty said. "As you get closer to the interior, it's creamier and overwhelmingly sharp."

US economy growth revised slightly higher for Q2

The US economy grew slightly more than first estimated in the second quarter but remained sub-par, a government update showed Wednesday.

The Commerce Department said gross domestic product -- a broad measure of the nation's goods and services -- rose at an annualized rate of 1.7 percent in the April-June period.

Its initial July estimate of GDP growth was 1.5 percent.

The reading was slightly better than the 1.6 percent rate expected by most analysts, but remained sluggish compared with the first quarter's 2.0 percent pace.

The Commerce Department said the update to last month's first estimate mainly reflected a downward revision to imports, which subtract from GDP, and upward revisions to consumer spending, exports, and state and local government spending.

The improvement in the US trade balance, with better exports, and a jump in spending in the massive service sector, signals growth and jobs, Robert Brusca at FAO Economics said.

"Good news... an improved composition of growth -- more final demand less inventory-building," he said.

UAW president calls Ryan comments on GM plant 'ludicrous'

Washington - United Auto Workers President Bob King blasted the comments of GOP vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan, who suggested that the Obama administration was to blame for closing an auto plant in 2008 - before he took office.

Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wisconsin, chairman of the House Budget Committee, suggested Wednesday night at the Republican National Convention that President Obama was to blame for General Motors closing its Janesville assembly plant in December 2008.

"A lot of guys I went to high school with worked at that GM plant. Right there at that plant, candidate Obama said: 'I believe that if our government is there to support you ? this plant will be here for another hundred years.' That's what he said in 2008," Ryan told delegates Wednesday night in Tampa. "Well, as it turned out, that plant didn't last another year.It is locked up and empty to this day.And that's how it is in so many towns today, where the recovery that was promised is nowhere in sight."

King called Ryan's comments "so ludicrous - you know the facts"

King noted that the plant closed when President George W. Bush was in office in 2008.

During last year's labor talks "we actually put Janesville on the idle list so if GM's market share goes back up, the market improves, the plant could reopen. If it wasn't for collective bargaining, there wouldn't even be that chance."

GM announced in June 2008 that it was closing the Janesville plant, citing slow demand for SUVs and high gas prices. GM shuttered the plant in December 2008 - while Bush was still in office.

Ryan - who represents Janesville in Congress -- wrote a letter to then GM CEO Rick Wagoner in June 2008 with the state's two U.S. senators asking GM to reconsider the decision. "Rather than closing the Janesville plant, a retooled Janesville plant can assist in GM's efforts to adapt to a changing marketing" Ryan and his colleagues wrote in a letter posted on his website.

King cited Republican opposition to the $85 billion auto bailout and noted that if Obama hadn't agreed to provide assistance and save GM, all of the Detroit automaker's plants would have closed.

GM has 43 U.S. plants total, including 12 assembly plants.

King, who's a strong supporter of Obama's and a delegate to the Democratic National Convention, said Ryan's speech was not accurate. "It was not factual. It was a lot of misrepresentation."

King cited Ryan's budget plan that he feels would cut social services to many poor people and give additional tax credits to wealthy Americans.

"I join all of the faith community, all of the faith leaders in saying that the Ryan-Romney budget is anti-Christian, anti-moral," King said. "It's just so wrong. (Ryan) is the guy leading the charge to really harm the most vulnerable."

Romney has fiercely criticized the UAW and labor unions in general. He has argued that the Obama administration gave special treatment to union workers during the bailout, while treating creditors less generously.

Ryan also lobbied the Obama administration in May 2009 to provide billions of dollars in loans to Chrysler Group LLC to try to save the company's Kenosha engine plant using the $25 billion Energy Department retooling loan program. "We strongly encourage you to work with Chrysler to use this available funding to retool the Kenosha engine plant in order to produce the fuel efficient 'Phoenix' line of engines," Ryan and three Wisconsin colleagues wrote in a May 2009 letter to auto czar Steve Rattner.

Chrysler announced in May 2009 as part of its bankruptcy restructuring it would close the Kenosha plant. The plant closed in October 2010, with about 600 workers losing their jobs.

The facility - once part of American Motors run by Mitt Romney's father, George - had 14,000 workers at its peak.

On Wednesday night, Ryan didn't repeat an inaccurate claim he made in a campaign stop earlier this month that Obama "broke his promise" by failing to keep the plant open.

"I remember President Obama visiting it when he was first running, saying he'll keep that plant open," Ryan said at a campaign stop in Ohio this month. "One more broken promise. We used to build Tahoes and Suburbans. One of the reasons that plant got shut down was $4 gasoline. You see, this costs jobs. The president's terrible energy policies are costing us jobs."

In fact, Obama made no such promise and the plant halted production in December 2008, when President George W. Bush was in office.

GM cited the low demand for SUVs and high gas prices during the Bush administration as the reason for closing the plant, but Obama hadn't taken office.

Obama did speak at the plant in February 2008, and suggested that a government partnership with automakers could keep the plant open, but made no promises as Ryan suggested.

The Janesville plant, which once employed about 7,000 and had 2,400 workers when GM announced it would close, remains on standby. The plant opened in 1919.

In 2009, a few dozen workers continued after the last SUV rolled off the line at Janesville to make pickup trucks for Isuzu on a contract basis.

In June 2009, GM considered three sites to locate a small car: its Orion plant in Michigan; Janesville, Wis.; and a Spring Hill, Tenn., plant slated to close in November. GM picked Orion and later reopened Spring Hill.

Ryan broke with his running mate, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, by voting for a government bailout of GM and Chrysler LLC in December 2008 without a requirement that the automakers file for bankruptcy first, as Romney had insisted.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel noted that Ryan's southern Wisconsin district lost four auto sector plants - including two Delphi Corp. plants between 2008 and 2010.

A team of scientists including those from the University of Southampton have shed new light on the world's history of climate change.

The Pacific Ocean has remained the largest of all oceans on the planet for many million years. It covers one third of the Earth's surface and has a mean depth of 4.2 km. Its biologically productive equatorial regions play an important role particularly to the global carbon cycle and long-term climate development.

During a four-month expedition of the Integrated Ocean Drilling Programme (IODP) on board the US drilling vessel JOIDES Resolution an international team of more than 100 scientists and technicians recovered 6.3 kilometers of sediment cores from water depths between 4.3 and 5.1 km and drilled 6.3 km of sediment cores at eight locations.

The cores offered an excellent archive of Earth's history and showed how global climate development during the past 55 million years is mirrored and influenced by geochemical processes deep within the ocean.

The findings are published in the latest edition of Nature.

Professor Heiko Plike, of the University of Southampton and National Oceanography Centre, Southampton was co-chief scientist of the cruise and lead author of the Nature study.

He explains: "Nowadays we often discuss global warming induced by man-made carbon dioxide. However, on geological timescales of millions of years other processes determine the carbon cycle."

Volcanoes are one major source of carbon dioxide input to the atmosphere. On the other hand the greenhouse gas is removed by weathering of rocks made up of carbonate.

"The overall balance of these processes is reflected in the deep ocean's carbonate compensation depth, the CCD," the MARUM scientist continues.

"This invisible surface is defined as the depth in the oceans at which the mineral calcite is dissolved. Hardly any biological remains made from carbonate below the CCD, for example chalk and microscopic plankton, are preserved. Instead the sediment that consists mostly of clay and plankton remains made from silica.

"The interesting point in our study is that the carbonate boundary is fluctuating over time. It shallows during periods of warm climate and normally deepens when ice age conditions prevail."

In the study, Professor Plike and co-workers demonstrate that in the equatorial Pacific the CCD was at 3.3 to 3.6km 55 million years ago. Between 52 and 47 million years ago, when very warm climate conditions prevailed, the CCD leveled up to 3 km. 34 million years ago, when the Earth slowly but steadily cooled and the first ice domes formed in Antarctica the CCD went down too. 10.5 million years ago it reached 4.8 km.

The cores drilled during the expedition strikingly demonstrate that the interplay of climate development and carbon cycle was not a one-way street at all.

"From 46 to 34 million years ago, when Earth turned into a permanent icehouse, our record reveals five intervals during which the CCD fluctuated upwards and downwards in the range of 200 and 900 metres," Professor Plike says. "These events, that often mirror warming and cooling phases, persisted between 250,000 and one million years."

Similar episodes were registered in the sediment cores for later parts of the Earth's history. 18.5 million years ago the CCD moved upward about 600 metres only to sink down to 4.7 km 2.5 million years later. Today, the Pacific carbonate compensation depth is at 4.5 km.

The Power of Networking | Sammy J Balloons | Trade Show Booths ...

Aug 29 2012

by Thad James

I am a firm advocate of business networking. I attend as many networking events as possible. And I belong to as many networking groups that fit my interests. Each has its own make up of business types and chemistry. But through my own experiences and researching articles on the subject, I have learned where to look for groups that effectively build relationships which lead to increased business.

Before I got to meet and greet anybody, I had to find networking groups to attend. You might think that?s as easy as searching the Internet and showing up. But not all groups fit all situations. Many groups have specific audiences. And you need to know your purpose and targets for networking. If you?re selling auto repair equipment, you don?t want to attend a networking group for homemade candle makers.

There are a lot of resources to find networking groups.

Your local Chambers of Commerce are a great source of networking events and potential referral business. I am very fortunate to have over forty chambers within an hour?s drive. Since I don?t have an unlimited marketing budget, I have to be very selective about the chambers I join. Before joining, I attended a monthly luncheon and got to meet many of the members. I picked up a membership directory to learn about the types of businesses that were members. I need to market to the right type of potential customers. I also researched the types and frequency of their events. I want a lot of opportunities to get to know fellow members.

The biggest website for finding any type of gathering is Meetup (www.meetup.com). This site has groups of every possible interest, both social and professional. Whether you want a group that discusses early American poetry or you want to meet other Dachshund owners; Meetup will find your group. For business networking, you will find a wide variety of group types. Research the ones that interest you and visit them. Many meet monthly for lunch, happy hour or in the evening. Several will have speakers who provide valuable business information.

If you?re already on LinkedIn (www.linkedin.com), then you have access to another source of networking opportunities. If you don?t have a listing on LinkedIn, then you?re missing hundreds if not thousands of potentials customers. Log on and create a profile. LinkedIn has a Groups page to allow like-minded people to discuss topics of interest. Many of these groups host networking meetings. They can be as specific as Intellectual Property Attorneys or as generic as Home Based Business Owners. A search of LinkedIn should prove to be very fruitful.

BNI, (www.bni.com), is a networking club with over 145,000 members worldwide. BNI groups are made up of local businesses but only one from any given business type. For instance; only one residential real estate agent, one corporate accountant, one commercial plumber. Members are strongly encouraged to bring direct referrals to other members and to grow the group membership with new unique businesses. The meetings are generally held every week. This allows members to build strong relationships.

Community organizations, (such as the Lions, Elks, Rotary Club and Masonic Lodges), are great groups. Traditionally, they function to provide benefit to a local community and not as a business networking group. However, members tend to get to know one another and will probably do business with other members.

Regardless of the source of the networking group or the type of group you join, the most important thing to remember is to BE INVOLVED. Go to the group meetings, get to know the other members and don?t sell your product during every conversation. Build relationships that will lead to future referrals. Networking is a long distance run not a fifty-yard dash.

It?s important to remember that people do business with people they know, like and trust. By properly networking, you can be that person.

5 Tips to Become a Better Bass Fisherman

August 28, 2012 10:00 AM Text Size: A . A . A A lot of guys sort of know how to catch large-and smallmouth bass. But the anglers in Bassmaster pro tournaments obsess over the details because landing one extra fish can mean big money. Here are five tips from the best.

DON'T GET COMFORTABLE

The first thing amateurs do wrong, they say, is fall in love with their favorite fishing spot and go-to lure. Remember the 7-pound bass you caught in that magical bay using a plastic worm while wearing your dad's lucky Brooklyn Dodgers cap? Coincidence. "I won't spend more than 10 minutes in the same spot fishing the same way, unless I've gotten a positive response," says Kevin VanDam, a seven-time Bassmaster Angler of the Year.

RELISH GRAY DAYS

"Bass are low-light predators," says Kevin VanDam. Go fishing "when the wind is blowing or it's cloudy, or just early in the morning or late in the evening." In low light a bass may chase a lure that is 20 feet away.

AGITATE YOUR FISH

Bass don't always bite because they're hungry. "A lot of times it's a straight aggressive reaction because you annoyed him," says VanDam. Drop the lure near the fish and move it erratically.

REEL IT IN SLOWLY

"Most amateurs fight a fish way too hard from the get-go," 2009 Bassmaster Classic champion Skeet Reese says. "They never stop reeling and they break a fish off." But don't allow the line to go slack. That can let the fish spit the lure.

... OR JUST CHEAT

The Alabama five-lure rig was banned from big tournaments earlier this year. It just made catching bass too easy. Now, there's no need to tell your fishing buddies that, but do check local rules on multilure rigs.
