WNBA MVP Tamika Catchings: Advocating for Health, Fitness and ...

Laura KolodjeskiLaura Kolodjeski

It?s safe to say there?s no shortage of inspirational women in the Women?s National Basketball Association (WNBA)! Earlier this year I featured WNBA President, Laurel J. Richie and Chicago Sky Head Coach, Pokey Chatman. Today, I?m excited to introduce you to the WNBA?s 2011 Most Valuable Player, Tamika Catchings, who plays for the Indiana Fever. Additionally, she?s a Dribble to Stop Diabetes Campaign Ambassador and co-founder of the Catch the Stars Foundation.

Q: How did you get started playing basketball?

A: My father was an NBA player for eleven years, playing for various teams including the Milwaukee Bucks, New Jersey Nets, Philadelphia 76ers and the Los Angeles Clippers. I really got started playing by watching my dad. I have an older brother and an older sister, so between the three of us we were very active and always playing sports.

Another reason I got involved in sports was because I was born with hearing problems, so I had to wear hearing aids and had a speech problem. Back then, I didn?t have the little hearing aids, I had the big ones and as a young girl that?s really not the thing that makes you popular. I remember just wanting to fit in and be normal and be like everybody else. I always got made fun of because of the way that I talked.

Sports really became an avenue for me just to be able to fit in and to be like everybody else. I knew that if I got made fun of off the court I could say, ?Hey, let?s go play basketball? or ?Let?s go play soccer.? I knew that some things in life I wouldn?t be able to change, but with sports I could always work harder and get better.

In seventh grade, I found my passion for basketball. I would go outside and play and play and play and it was just something that I loved. I enjoyed volleyball and still played until I went to college. I ran track and field into my junior year but during seventh grade, I decided that I was going to follow in my dad?s footsteps and play in the NBA. That was my dream.
2011 WNBA MVP Tamika Catchings

Q: You?ve carried that dream through to playing in the WNBA. What are some of the lessons you have learned playing at that level?

A: The WNBA is very professional and, as a professional athlete, it?s your responsibility to take care of yourself and your body. In college you really don?t have a choice because the team does everything together, including eating. In the WNBA, you have a schedule of practice times and games. In between practices and games, it?s up to you to make sure you?re getting in the weight room. You need to make sure that if you need to get extra cardio, that you?re doing it. And you have to make sure you?re eating right. Unlike college, there aren?t people watching you and making sure you?re getting everything done.

Q: Can you tell us a little about your Catch the Stars Foundation?

A: We work with boys and girls ages 7 to 15 and we offer sports-related and education-related programs. In the beginning, my sister and I started by offering basketball camps. Eventually, we were hosting so many different types of programs, we decided to start the Catch the Stars Foundation and put all of our different programs under that organization. Since then, we have added mentoring programs and we?re continuing to grow.

I love being able to impact the kids, especially early on, when you can involve them and guide them and lead them, you can tell that it makes a difference in their future.

Q: You?re now a spokesperson for Dribble to Stop Diabetes. Why did you decide to become so involved in the program?

A: Diabetes runs in my family. My nephew has type 2 diabetes and one of my aunts has type 1 diabetes. I realize that diabetes affects all of us. For me it?s really important to know what?s in my family, to make sure that I stay active and eat as healthy as I can.

Plus, Dribble to Stop Diabetes correlates directly with what I?m already doing with my job so it is a perfect fit. This is about setting an example. Any time you have kids looking up to you, it?s important to share the right message. When parents ask questions about diabetes and I can encourage them to look at the website, take a risk assessment, and talk to a doctor, then I think we?re promoting the right behavior.

Q: You mentioned how important kids are to you, any words of wisdom that you share with kids you meet?

A: It?s all about dreams and setting goals. In all of the programs that I?m involved in, we have them sit down and write goals. We talk about short-term goals and long-term goals.

A lot of people think that setting goals has to be a big thing. It can be, or it can be a simple daily task. It can be as big or little as you want. I was in seventh grade when I made my goal. The WNBA wasn?t even here and I knew what I wanted. I had a dream of what I wanted to do. To think about what I wanted to do in?seventh grade and to actually be doing it, it?s amazing.

It really is amazing! Tamika is such an inspiration and I think we can all take note from her experience and strive to accomplish our goals. All it takes is a dream and hard work. Thanks Tamika!

All the best,

Laura K.

Adding Living Space To A Basement | Double Tap Blog

September 26, 2012 ? 8:20 am

One of the home improvement projects that is growing in popularity is basement excavation to add more living space. There are limited options for expanding the floor plan of most homes and additions can be expensive. A basement offers special opportunities that can result in valuable new room. Many times they are not finished or even completely dug out. Even if they are, they are often shallow. Having the basement floor excavated will lower the floor enough to make plenty of head room. Experienced professionals will be able to reinforce the foundation to support the newly lowered floor and it will be ready to improve.

Decorating the basement will depend on the type of area it is and what it will be used for. Hanging drywall, carpeting, and trimming the room out will give it a finished look and feel. This is how many recreation rooms have been made, as well as downstairs bars, and home theaters. This can be a difficult project, even for those who have the right knowledge and skills. Having the right tools and the training to use them safely is the best way to avoid problems.

There are some other times when basement lowering will be necessary. Homes that are having problems with the foundation are a good example. Areas that are subject to extreme weather may notice they have some problems. Seasonal freezing and thawing can cause a home's foundation to weaken as it shifts. Sometimes this can cause cracks that are easy to see. Other times the basement will get damp as leaks develop from cracks that can not be seen. These problems can be fixed if they are caught in time. Early repairs will be more affordable than if the problem goes through another seasonal cycle,

The dampness in the basement, that is usually a sign of a problem with the foundation, should be of particular concern. Fixing any cracks and waterproofing the walls should prevent any more water or moisture from getting into the basement. However, the damage is often already done. When damp conditions exist in the basement, there is a major concern about mold growth. It may go unnoticed for some time but can have drastic health effects. Many people report having breathing and respiratory problems in homes where there is mold growth. Cleaning the mold up will improve the conditions and make it easier for the residents to breath again. Checking the foundation and making sure it is in good condition is a good way to keep the rest of the home healthy and safe.

What's Your Credit Score? - Finance - Global Economic Crisis ...

A recent study by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) found that the credit scores we buy from credit agencies may be quite different from the credit scores that lenders buy from the same agencies.?

?

From the report:

?

Consumers cannot know ahead of time whether the scores they purchase will closely track or vary moderately or significantly from a score sold to creditors. Thus, consumers should not rely on credit scores they purchase exclusively as a guide to how creditors will view their credit quality.

?

Most of the time, the scores are similar?73% to 80% of the time, in fact. However, for some borrowers, the differences can be substantial and can result in being denied a loan.

?

According to Bloomberg (Dougherty, 25 Sep 2012):

?

?This is like choosing what college to apply to without knowing your SAT or ACT scores, or whether the college uses ACT or SAT,? Chi Chi Wu, an attorney with the Boston-based National Consumer Law Center, said in an interview.

?

For discussion:

?

What leads to differences in credit scores?

?

What are the potential negative outcomes for consumers if they do not see an accurate credit score before applying for a loan?

Captains expect friendly but intense Ryder Cup

(AP) ? The admiration Davis Love III and Jose Maria Olazabal have for each other started long before they were appointed Ryder Cup captains.

Olazabal was locked in a duel with Greg Norman on the back nine of the 1999 Masters when he pulled away, only to discover that Love was making a late charge with a bogey-free back nine that featured a chip-in from 25 feet behind the green on the par-3 16th. Olazabal pulled away, however, and won by two shots.

The next year after the Champions Dinner at Augusta National, Olazabal noticed there were a few extra bottles of wine.

He had them sent to Love.

"He felt like he had beaten me from the year before, and I should have gotten something out of it," Love said.

Love made his Ryder Cup debut in 1993 at The Belfry, teaming with Tom Kite against Seve Ballesteros and Olazabal, the most successful partnership in the history of the matches. The Americans handed the "Spanish Armada" one of only two defeats in their Ryder Cup career. Just his luck, Love had to face them twice more, both losses.

"Kite and Seve were bashing away, and we were on the side trying to be friendly," Love said. "We always had that respect for each other. There's a lot of connections. I was very pleased when I found out he was going to be the captain."

Of all the details that go on behind the scenes in what Love refers to as a "very structured" event, he said there has never been "one problem, one controversy."

"It speaks to what kind of guy he is," Love said.

One of the discussions was about clothing. The Americans wear a collection of red, white and blue, though it doesn't have full ownership of those colors. All indications are that the U.S. team will have red shirts for Sunday, presumably so that it won't clash with European blue.

Olazabal is said to want blue for Sunday as a tribute to what Ballesteros typically wore in the final round. Ballesteros died in May 2011, making this the first Ryder Cup without the great Spaniard who was so responsible in reviving the matches.

"He was very understanding of it, and I'll say no more at the moment," Olazabal said of the team colors and conversations with Love.

Make no mistake, though. Both teams are desperate to hold that 17-inch gold trophy that Olazabal brought over on the plane from London. Europe has won six of the past eight times in the Ryder Cup, including a 14?-13? win in Wales two years ago.

Tiger Woods said last week that captains take on the personality they showed as players, and Love would be quick to agree with that, especially when it comes to Olazabal, a two-time Masters champion who fought through injuries.

"You know he's competitive, and it's going to be competitive," Love said. "But it's organized, friendly, cordial, respectful. That's how it should be."

Indeed, this is a different Ryder Cup from when both captains first played.

That much was clear by the manner in which the European team arrived. Olazabal stepped off the plane at an airport in Rockford, about 45 minutes from Medinah, with the Ryder Cup trophy in his possession. He was followed off the plane by only three of his 12 players ? Francesco Molinari, Paul Lawrie and Nicolas Colsaerts.

Everyone else was already here.

Five of the Europeans ? Ian Poulter, Justin Rose, Peter Hanson, Graeme McDowell and Sergio Garcia ? have homes at Lake Nona in Orlando, Fla.

Rory McIlroy and Lee Westwood, among four players who were in Atlanta on Sunday for the Tour Championship, are moving to south Florida. Luke Donald lives about 45 minutes away on the north side of Chicago.

It wasn't that long ago that Team Europe came over together because that's where so many lived and played ? Howard Clark and David Gilford, Sam Torrance and Mark James, Ian Woosnam and Colin Montgomerie.

Olazabal didn't see that as a problem.

"Obviously, when you look at some of the European players, they have their home base here," he said. "They play the tour over here. They are very familiar with the golf courses around here, with their opponents, and in that regard, I think they feel really more comfortable with the whole situation of coming here to the States to play The Ryder Cup. It has changed in that respect, and also that they have realized through the years that they have been able to compete against the players here.

"And that somehow boosts your confidence, and that is a very important part when you are playing match play."

Still, there was a certain charm about having the team arrive as one.

Love remembers his first Ryder Cup in 1993, when U.S. captain Tom Watson assembled his group in New York and spoke of a grand adventure to Europe with the sole purpose of bringing back the cup.

Golf is different now.

"I miss that a little bit," Love said. "We all gather and fly over. They fly over here. That was a really cool thing. But I think what we have got now is a much bigger event."

Noting that so many of the world's best players are at Medinah Country Club, Love said that golf has become "incredibly better."

"What we have in our team rooms now and the camaraderie between the two teams is just incredible, and it's amazing how much it's changed over the years," Love said. "And we're playing against our friends, but it's still as intense ? maybe even more ? because we are more familiar with them.

"That doesn't make it any less competitive," he said. "It just makes it that we know each other a lot better. Makes the team room party on Sunday night a lot more fun."

Commodity prices fall on global growth worries

Most commodity prices are dropping as worries about global economic growth bubble back to the surface.

Gold, industrial metals and energy products all fell Monday after a closely watched survey showed business confidence fell for a fifth straight month in Germany. The decline suggests that Europe's debt crisis is hurting the region's biggest economy.

The U.S. and China have recently shown signs of weaker economic growth as well.

Slower economic growth cuts into demand for such commodities as copper, platinum, palladium and energy products.

Analysts say investors are selling commodities for a profit. Some are using that money to buy safer assets such as Treasurys.

In other trading, orange juice futures are down 5.2 percent on expectations that storms in the Atlantic will miss key growing regions in Florida.

(AP) ? No other trio of American golfers has qualified for more consecutive Ryder Cup teams than Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Jim Furyk. Collectively, they have won 146 official tournaments around the world, including 19 majors.

That only makes their Ryder Cup record look all the more inferior.

They have been the core of the U.S. team since 1997 at Valderrama, where they combined for a 3-6-1 record as the United States lost the cup. Perhaps it was a sign of what was to come. For all their individual achievement, none has a winning record in the Ryder Cup. They have been on six teams together ? Woods missed in 2008 at Valhalla while recovering from knee surgery ? and the only celebration they shared was that remarkable comeback at Brookline.

"I would have expected and definitely wished for a much better record than that," Furyk said Tuesday.

It leads to a question that brings to mind the chicken and the egg.

Do they all have losing records because they are playing on losing teams? Or does the U.S keep losing because this triumvirate has losing records?

"I think it's both," Woods said Tuesday. "In order to win cups, you have to earn points. And we certainly have not earned points. And on top of that, Phil, Jim and myself have been put out there a lot during those years. So if we're not earning points, it's hard to win Ryder Cups that way."

So much has been expected. So little has been delivered. And they are running out of time to leave a lasting impression.

Furyk is 42 and has gone four of the last five PGA Tour seasons without winning, though the exception was in 2010 when he won three times and was voted player of the year. Even so, he had to rely on being a captain's pick for the first time. Mickelson, also 42, has qualified for nine straight teams dating to 1995. He will set an American record for most Ryder Cups when the matches began Friday. Even so, he narrowly qualified for the team this year.

They will be leaned on heavily again at Medinah as the U.S. tries to win back the cup.

They Americans, dressed in navy blue shirts, headed out for the first full day of practice under warm sunshine in the Chicago suburbs. They played fourball matches among the three groups, which was evident when Bubba Watson and his pink-shafted driver drove through a dogleg on the 440-yard 11th hole and over the gallery's head. He still played that shot (and they won the hole).

U.S. captain Davis Love III finally showed his hand ? and confirmed some obvious pairings in mind ? by sending out Woods and Steve Stricker, Mickelson and Keegan Bradley, Watson and Webb Simpson. Other pairings were Matt Kuchar and Dustin Johnson, Jason Dufner and Zach Johnson, and Furyk and Brandt Snedeker.

There were few surprises on the European side.

European captain Jose Maria Olazabal had Ian Poulter, Justin Rose, Luke Donald and Lee Westwood in one group; Rory McIlroy, Graeme McDowell, Sergio Garcia and Paul Lawrie in another; and Mark Kaymer, Nicolas Colsaerts, Francesco Molinari and Peter Hanson in a third.

Furyk referred to McIlroy as a "marked man" last week, and not many could argue. The 23-year-old from Northern Ireland already is a two-time major champion, with both wins by eight shots. He has established himself as No. 1 in the world without debate, and has won three of his last six tournaments against the strongest field.

For so many years, Woods was that guy on the U.S. team, and that's why his record gets so much attention.

"I kind of liken it to playing premiership football, the biggest teams, the Manchester Uniteds, the Liverpools, the Chelseas, the Arsenals," McDowell said. "Any lesser team that comes to play these guys, they have a tendency to raise their game because it's a huge game for an underdog to play a Tiger Woods. And they get up for it. They are not expected to win. When expectation levels drop, game tends to improve. I think a guy who plays Tiger Woods, or a player of that caliber, he doesn't expect to win, so he lets it all go and he plays out of his skin and gets the upset."

Woods, despite his 86 wins and 14 majors, has never had a winning record in the Ryder Cup. He has combined to go 6-3-0 in his last two events to raise his career record to 13-14-2. Even at the height of his game, Europe would say that he could only win five points out of the 28 points up for grabs.

Woods never came close to that, which helps explain why Europe has won six of the seven Ryder Cups in which he played.

"Certainly, I am responsible for that because I didn't earn the points that I was put out there for," Woods said. "And that's part of being a team. I needed to go get my points for my team, and I didn't do that. Hopefully, I can do that this week. And hopefully, the other guys can do the same and we can get this thing rolling."

Mickelson began his Ryder Cup career in 1995 at Oak Hill, where he went 3-0 and privately burned that he wasn't used more often. That turned out to be the most points Mickelson contributed in a week.

Their contributions are so noticeable that Mickelson and Furyk are tied for losing the most fourball matches (eight) among American players. Furyk is 1-8-1 in fourballs, though there are pleasant Ryder Cup memories. He took down Nick Faldo in his debut at Valderrama, and it was his big win over Sergio Garcia at The Country Club in 1999 that was critical in the great American comeback.

None of this bothers Love, who played on only two winning teams and had a 9-12-5 record.

"Match play is just so different," he said. "I kind of throw the Jim Furyk or the Phil Mickelson or Tiger Woods record of wins and losses out. ... There's a reason why these guys keep making teams, and I don't look a whole lot at the record."

That speaks to what they have done in their careers. They qualified for six straight teams from 1997 through 2008 (Woods would have led the Ryder Cup standings except for being injured). Woods was a captain's pick only once, in 2010. Mickelson has never been picked.

They have shown themselves as America's best over the last 15 years. Trouble is, Europe keeps going home with the trophy.

Forensic Related Books - Digital Forensics Forums | ForensicFocus ...

Just completed my MSc in Computer Forensics, so I have developed a mini-library of forensic books Smile Here's a few of the books I went back to time and again:

Brian Carrier - File System Forensic Analysis - The core book for any forensic library. Explains the computer file system at a low-level, which gives you a huge insight into the file system at the hex/binary level.

Venema & Farmer - Forensic Discovery - a great beginning overview of computer forensics.

Jones, Betjlich, Rose - Real Digital Forensics - Another great all rounder book. Has a great section on analysing unknown programs (stack analysis etc)

Harlan Carvey - Windows Forensics and Incident Recovery - focuses on Windows forensics (duh). Really points out what to look for on a Windows system during an examination. Great section on perl for Windows - the forensicator's language of choice Smile

Altheide, Carvey - Digital Forensics with Open Source Tools - does what it says on the tin. If you haven't shelled out for EnCase/FTK, this provides you with the alternative tools to do the job (it also doesn't hurt to have alternatives anyway!)

Eoghan Casey - Handbook of Digital Forensics and Investigation - Gives a good introduction to Windows, Linux and Mac forensics, as well as mobile forensics. Good section on methodology as well.

Specifically looking at mobile forensics, there's:

Andrew Hoog - Android Forensics

Hoog, Strzempka - iPhone and iOS Forensics

Jonathon Zdziarski - iPhone Forensics

There's also a wealth of information on the authors' blogs - much of it updating/improving on material in the books. But as athulin says, there's no "catch all" book - many of the ones above offer a broad overview, but if you want to focus on a subject, you're probably better off going online and reading white papers, blogs etc to get the more specific information.

"Only Decent People": New Dutch Movie About Interracial ...

"Only Decent People"

Source: blogs.indiewire.com

You don?t need to speak Dutch to realize how ridiculous this new movie is.

The film is called???Alleen maar nette mensen? (Only Decent People) and is adapted from the book by the same name written by Dutch Jewish author Robert Vuistjes. Robert The book was highly controversial in the Netherlands when it was released several years ago and ahead of it?s release next month, it?s stirring up the same conversations again.

According to Shadow & Act:

ONLY DECENT PEOPLE is a Dutch comedy based on the controversial bestseller by Robert Vuijsje. Starring Geza Weisz, Imanuelle Grives, Annet Malherbe & Jeroen Krabbe. David Samuels is from an intellectual Jewish family from the posh Amsterdam Old South, where he is often mistaken as Moroccan because of his dark hair.

He has a girlfriend named Naomi and they both live in the posh district Amsterdam South, where ?only decent people? live. The word ?decent people?, which is also the title of the novel, refers to people who are not ?allochtonen? and especially not Moroccans. ?Allochtonen? is the Dutch word for non-western foreigners.

David is a remarkable man on a mission: to find a ghetto fabulous queen with great tits and thick buttocks. He dumps his girlfriend, drops out of college and sets out on a quest for his dream woman.?His parents and friends declare him mad, but David continues unabated. His search leads him to the Bijlmer, where, after some wild adventures he is left disappointed. Will David ever find his ideal woman ? a large, dark sex goddess with booty and brains?

Yes, this is a real thing.

They call it an apolitical and irreligious film about the clash between social and cultural classes, and, not surprisingly the?international blog Afro-Europe says it sparked controversy within the Black community in The Netherlands.

Under a literary flag Vuijsje sketches -intended or unintended ? an archetypal image of (black) women, which some consider stereotype, stigma, caricature and even discriminatory. The?opinions?about the book are mixed.?Some people felt that the book cheapened black women and interracial relationships, but others felt that a lot of black women fit the profile and should therefore not complain about the stereotypes in the book.

Of course, the author has disputed claims that he is a racist based on the fact that his girlfriend is Black.

"Robert Vuijsje and Lynn Spier"

Source: womeninc.nl

They aren?t saying if the film will travel, but it?s doubtful it would be received anywhere outside of Holland. Apparently, Holland started waving the post-racial flag too soon thus giving way to this sort of foolishness and even a black-owned??Negro For Hire? company.

As reported by Afro-Europe, The Dutch company BlackPack is an agency exclusively for black men and white women are the main customers.?The women hire the men to strip, dj, dance or to play djembe, but also to assist in shopping, playing chauffeur or for exotic cooking.?The men can be ?rented out? for?55 Euro ($69.10 US dollars) an hour. The founder, Bryan Oudhoff, told the local newspaper that he ?wanted to respond to the stereotypes that exist of blacks: blacks are better dancers and have more sense of rhythm.

Again, this is a real thing.

I want to say Black people in our country would never tolerate this sort of thing, but then I remember that the most popular show for our demographic is ?Love and Hip Hop: Atlanta? and that Basketball Wives may become a movie. We?ve got our fair share of negative images of black women in the media over here as well. Though we will march with Sharpton and start a Change.org petition on sight when something is blatantly racist, there are a lot of messages and portrayals we allow in this country that are just as problematic but less overt than this movie.

Still, I don?t understand what this author is trying to do with this film. There are definitely people who date outside of their race because of a fetish, but nobody should be supporting this foolishness. And just because the author has a black wife (who clearly signed off on the book & film as well) doesn?t mean he is not shamelessly ignorant.

Watch the preview below (there are no subtitles and it?s NSFW, but you get the gist)

Can you believe this is a movie? What do you think about this story?

World stocks up ahead of ECB meeting

BANGKOK (AP) ? World stock markets rose Thursday ahead of a European Central Bank meeting that analysts anticipate will announce a plan to support financially struggling European countries.

ECB President Mario Draghi is expected to unveil a new bond-buying program intended to bring down the high borrowing costs of Spain and Italy. Without some way to reduce the interest rates on the bonds they sell, the two nations could be pushed into asking for a bailout, following a path taken by Greece, Ireland, Portugal and Cyprus.

"It won't save Europe but it will keep Spanish yields and Italian yields down for now and give Europe's leaders another 3-6 months to come up with bigger and better plans for a real solution," said analysts at DBS Bank Ltd. in Singapore.

European stocks rose in early trading. Britain's FTSE 100 added 0.7 percent to 5,699.46. Germany's DAX jumped 1.4 percent to 7,061.32 and France's CAC-40 gained 1.2 percent to 3,445.30. Wall Street also appeared set for gains, with Dow Jones industrial futures 0.6 percent higher at 13,122 and S&P 500 futures rising 0.6 percent to 1,412.20.

Analysts also expressed skepticism about whether an ECB move would sufficient to resolve the debt crisis affecting the 17 nations that use the euro when the world's major economies are suffering sluggish growth.

"I do think reality is setting in, that there is only so much the ECB can do. At the end of the day, the macro data doesn't look great. So there's probably an inclination for the markets to drift until a lead comes in from the macro side," said Lorraine Tan, director at Standard & Poor's equity research in Singapore.

She said she didn't expect a big improvement in key economic data until the fourth quarter of 2012.

"If China starts to show better numbers that will make an impact. But we really don't expect to see too much change in the numbers until September data rolls around."

Earlier in the day, stock markets in Asia wavered before posting modest gains.

Japan's Nikkei 225 closed marginally higher at 8,680.57. Hong Kong's Hang Seng added 0.3 percent to 19,209.30. South Korea's Kospi gained 0.4 percent to 1,881.24, boosted by tech shares. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 rose 0.8 percent to 4,312.90.

Mainland China's Shanghai Composite Index rose 0.7 percent to 2,051.92 while the smaller Shenzhen Composite Index added 1 percent to 859.30.

South Korean technology giant Samsung Electronics rose 0.6 percent after saying sales of its Galaxy S3 smartphones had topped the 20 million mark since its release in late May. LG Electronics added 1.4 percent.

Benchmark oil for October delivery was up $1.09 to $96.45 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 6 cents to finish at $95.36 per barrel on the Nymex on Tuesday.

In currencies, the euro rose to $1.2617 from $1.2599 late Wednesday in New York. The dollar rose marginally to 78.42 yen from 78.41 yen.

Verizon Business Security Blog ? Blog Archive ? Ask the Data: On ...

This post is the second of three on this data set.? ?On Opportunistic Attacks, Part 1? talks broadly about where opportunistic attacks begin: Where are we seeing attempted connections and where are they coming from?? This post will look at the typical attack pattern: Are we seeing patterns in the scans of hosts or a ?light touch? of isolated checks?? Finally, Part 3 will attempt to understand timing: How long can a host or service be on the internet before it would experience the beginning of an opportunistic attack?

In the first part of this series we looked at what types of services opportunistic attacks were after and with what frequency.? We also spent some time looking at where the opportunistic packets were coming from.? Now we?re going to dive into their methods of scanning or checking for vulnerable services, are their any patterns we can detect or is there just a ?light touch??? What we found was quite interesting and dare I say, surprising.?

But before we jump into our findings, I?d like to reiterate that this data collection is absolutely dead simple and not particularly difficult to collect.? We?re simply logging the source and destinations IP, ports and protocols and when packets appear on a variety of IP addresses.? This type of data collection is possible for any individual or company with one or more IP addresses on the internet.

How many ports are scanned by a single IP?

Back ?in the day?, I worked for an Internet Service Provider and I wrote a monitoring application to detect scans of our systems and alert on them.? It was set to alert when any host had more than a configured threshold of ports scanned and it alerted us to possible malicious traffic fairly often (we were a small ISP).? It was that mentality that I approached this analysis.? I was curious to know what was the most prominent set of ports attackers would scan for.? Perhaps, I thought there would be a few standard tools in use that had a standard set of ports and that pattern would emerge in the data.? Boy was I naive and consequently was reminded by a co-worker that ?the plural of anecdote is not data.?a whole lot of opportunistic attackers try one port and move on

Once the data was compiled and I created the chart to the right, I couldn?t believe what I was looking at.? Go ahead and take a peak at the graphic.? 97.4% of the IP addresses that sent packets at us only checked one port.? I figured something was wrong with my analysis so I double and triple checked it because 97.4% of IP addresses only testing one port was not within the reality of my anecdotal evidence. But sure enough, that?s what was happening!

This has several implications, first, it?s probably safe to assume that opportunistic attackers are looking for a single vulnerability.? It must be much easier to look for a single weakness across many hosts than any any weakness on a single host.?? Another way to look at this is that attackers are lazy like everyone else ? they find the first thing that accomplishes their goal and they stick with it. Secondly, any sort of threshold (at least on a single host) would never trigger unless the threshold were set at 1.? The monitoring software I wrote years ago would now sit almost completely quiet. It?s worth noting that out of the 8,000+ IP addresses recorded, one source attempted 904 ports, another tried 204 and a third tried 43 and those are the top 3.

How hard did they try?

Since we know a huge proportion (97.4%) of these 81% of ports saw only 1 packet per source IP opportunistic packets are trying just a single port, perhaps there is something in how often they tried.? I wasn?t sure what to expect here since I was thrown off by my first question.? But since we were sending back reset packets for closed ports (and they were all closed), I wasn?t expecting a high return rate.? Sure enough, 81.3% of ports attempted saw a single attempt (see image).?? I didn?t break down the time difference between these attempts because the main story I found is that there is an incredibly small log footprint for opportunistic attacks and?

97% of opportunistic attackers try one port and 81% send a single packet.

Oh sorry, I don?t want to exclude any readers, so I will restate that for the qualitative risk folks out there:

There?s a big chance opportunistic attacker try a very small number of ports and they won?t send many packets.

This leads us to the next point.? This data is telling us that systems or applications trying to capture opportunistic data like this don?t have to carefully emulate operating systems.? For example, while we could make a claim that ?Attackers often remotely fingerprint operating systems?, it appears, (when it comes to opportunistic attackers) they certainly do not do this.? Instead, they check for one?specific vulnerability and move on as if fingerprinting is a waste of valuable scanning time.? Which also means capturing this data is relatively dead simple? just listen, record and count.

Finally, if the majority of attackers look for a single port once and move on, they are the complete opposite of an advanced threat, as a community they have a clear repeatable pattern that we can rather simply identify.? Therefore I?d like to coin the term ?Simple Consistent Threat? (SCT).? The term describes an adversary that uses very simple techniques and rather than adapt for their target, they simply find a target that is susceptible to their single style of attack.? As a community of threat agents, they appear to be consistent in who they attack (everyone) and the actions they try (a single service).? What?s good about that is that by simply observing this pattern, they quickly become a transparent adversary and rather simple to prevent.

Breach Data on the Simple Consistent Threat

By looking into the data we?ve collected for the DBIR, there?s a clear relationship between the size of the organization (measured by number of employees) and the number of Simple Consistent Threats causing a breach.? As organizations grow, the number of breaches caused by SCT?s decrease and we can assume it?s not because they somehow magically avoid larger organizations.? This decrease it?s more likely due to an increase in security maturity of the organizations.? Attempts from SCT?s are relatively simple and can be mitigated with a few basic security controls and practices.? So why have we consistently seen this style of attack in over 70% of the breaches we?ve analyzed over the last 2 years?

No really, I?m asking.

With An Eye Toward Video Discovery, Flixster Relaunches To Help Users Navigate The World Of Movies Online

Flixster PictureSo here's the good news: There are more movies available online than ever before. And the bad news: There are also more movie services than ever. What that means for consumers is a hugely fragmented experience, where they never know where one movie is available for purchase or rental, or even if it's available through a video subscription service like Netflix. With a relaunch of its web site, Time Warner-owned Flixster is looking to help users get at whatever movie they want to see, wherever it's available. Time Warner acquired Flixster and Rotten Tomatoes last May, and then made the Flixster website and apps part of its UltraViolet rollout. Unfortunately, reaction to the new Flixster -- and the UltraViolet digital rights locker it was linked to -- was pretty negative at launch. Flixster has in the last several months worked to improve it, and is launching a site-wide refresh in beta that will take it back to its video discovery roots.

How To Obtain A CDL Philadelphia ? Reference and Education

If you are trying to drive a special vehicle like commercial motor vehicles you will require a CDL Philadelphia from that state. Studying certain parts of the test will help you pass it with flying colors. Each states requirement varies so check those before beginning.

Vehicles such as school buses or a vehicle?s intended to carry over sixteen passengers. A CDL is also required when you are transporting hazardous material. An exception to this rule is any military trucks only when in the required uniform.

There is a two part test to receive your license. You will need to demonstrate a written skills test and knowledge about the particular truck you will drive. The driving test also needs to be taken in whatever automobile that you will be using.

You should be expected to be tested on three parts. Pre-inspection of your truck and the knowledge of basic vehicle control are part of the written portion. Then you will need to have the skill set in real live situations with driving.

When you begin the pre-inspection your mirrors and tire pressure should be checked. Cargo devices and all exterior lights provide you and others on the road safety measures. Also being aware of weather conditions and making sure it is not unsafe to drive are very important details that cannot be overlooked. The engine should be turned on checking for indications of trouble. Once the truck is on try shifting gears to make sure those work.

A major part is the pre-inspection that cannot be over looked is the cargo area of the truck. You would not want to see that your cargo is overweight or off balanced. This will cause a balance issue with the truck supposing you make a huge turn you could tip over. Be aware that the cargo is not allowed to block your access to the emergency stuff and needs to be very secured checking wires that holds it in place.

It is required to recognize the weight limits of the different states. If you are traveling across borders some states have different weight limits. A usual formula that is used to help calculate the weight is called bridge support. Be alert about the restrictions for special cargo such as hanging meat or carrying live animals.

After all the written portions are done you be tested on your ability to safely navigate the commercial vehicle. Driving this type of cargo car is majorly different from the average transportation. The test administration will guide you to real live situations including the required steps to take when approaching a railroad track. Your ability to merge into oncoming traffic is another part that will be tested.

If you?re looking for a new job that required you to drive commercial vehicles you will need to get a CDL Philadelphia. This test is not the same as the one to hold a regular license as there are special considerations that need to be met. It will be good to study specific parts to pass.

Vintage photo of a 1936 Ford

I don't know much about this old photograph, which I picked up at a flea market. So I doubt we'll ever know the complete story behind this couple and this car.

The writing on the back states:

Yr. 1937
Irene + Elwood Henry
standing at yr. 36 ford
I'm not a car guy, so I'm not going to embarrass myself here and try to delve into makes and models and Ford's automobile history.

I can direct you to a few links regarding Fords in the 1930s, though:

If any experts on Ford makes and models want to tell us what we're looking at here, your comments would be greatly welcome.

I'd also be thrilled if there's anyone out there who recognizes Irene and Elwood from this photo. They look like a fine couple.

Spacewalkers Overcome Stuck Bolt to Fix Space Station Power System

This story was updated at 2:03 p.m. EDT.

Two spacewalking astronauts successfully replaced a vital power unit on the International Space Station today (Sept. 5), defeating a stubborn bolt that originally delayed the fix with the help of some improvised tools made of spare parts and a toothbrush.

NASA astronaut Sunita Williams and Japanese spaceflyer Akihiko Hoshide performed today's spacewalk repair. The fix-it job in space was actually an extra spacewalk tacked on to their mission after the stuck space station bolt prevented the astronauts from properly installing the power unit, called a main bus switching unit (MBSU), on the outpost's backbone-like truss last week on Aug. 30.

The International Space Station has four 220-pound MBSUs that harness power from the outpost's solar arrays and distribute it throughout the orbiting complex. Without the use of one unit, the station had been unable to relay power from two of the eight solar arrays on the massive orbiting complex.

"Looks like you guys just fixed the station," astronaut Jack Fischer radioed from Mission Control at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston. "It's been like living on the set of Apollo 13 the past few days. NASA does impossible pretty darn well, so congratulations to the whole team."

At the beginning of today's spacewalk, Williams and Hoshide removed the MBSU from where it had been temporarily tied down with a tether last week. The duo then spent several hours troubleshooting the unit and the two bolts that are designed to secure it in place on the space station's truss.

After undoing the bolts, the spacewalkers examined them for possible damage, and inspected the corresponding receptacles on the MBSU for debris that was suspected to be inside.

"I see metal shavings," Williams said as she inspected the MBSU after it had been removed. "Small metal shavings ? smaller than last time we saw in the housing." [Photos: Spacewalkers Fix Space Station Power Unit]

The spacewalkers used improvised cleaning tools and a pressurized can of nitrogen gas to clean out the metal shavings from the bolt receptacles.

"I see a lot of metal shavings coming out," Hoshide said as he maneuvered a wire cleaner around one of the bolt holders.

Williams and Hoshide then lubricated a spare bolt and manually threaded it into the place where the real bolt was eventually driven, in an effort to ensure that the receptacle was clear of any debris.

Following last week's failed attempt to install the replacement MBSU, mission managers, engineers and veteran spacewalkers worked around the clock at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston to devise ways to fix the stuck bolt, NASA spokesman Josh Byerly said in his live spacewalk commentary.

Part of their brainstorming included fashioning tools from existing supplies on the orbiting complex for Williams and Hoshide to use to remove debris from inside the bolt housings. One of the cleaning tools used today was made from a spare toothbrush.

As the spacewalk approached the four-hour mark, the astronauts were given the option to proceed with installing the MBSU, or clean it off and bring the unit inside the station for more analysis. The two spacewalkers unanimously agreed to continue on with their work.

"I think we can press," Hoshide said. "Get 'er done."

"Copy get 'er done," Fischer replied.

When Hoshide reported that the troublesome bolt was finally locked into place, the flight managers in Mission Control erupted in applause.

"That is a little slice of awesome pie," Fischer radioed to the crew.

Last week, Williams and Hoshide removed a faulty MBSU and tried to install the spare, but they were unable to drive in one of the bolts that secures the unit to the station's truss. After repeated attempts failed the astronauts were forced to wrap up their marathon spacewalk.

The Aug. 30 spacewalk lasted 8 hours and 17 minutes, making it the third longest spacewalk in history and the longest one ever performed by a space station crew.

With the MBSU secured in place, the spacewalkers went on to remove a faulty camera from the station's Canadarm 2 robotic arm, and replaced it with a new one before returning into the Quest airlock and ending the spacewalk at 1:34 p.m. EDT (1734 GMT).

Today's outing was clocked at 6 hours and 28 minutes, and was a record-setting excursion for Williams. Roughly two hours into today's spacewalk, Williams overtook Peggy Whitson, a veteran spaceflyer and former Chief of the Astronaut Office, as the record holder for the most time spent working in the vacuum of space by a female astronaut, Byerly said.

Today's outing was the sixth for Williams and the second spacewalk for Hoshide, who is only the third Japanese spaceflyer to work outside in the vacuum of space.

The International Space Station is currently home to six astronauts: Williams and Joe Acaba of NASA, Hoshide of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, and Russian cosmonauts Gennady Padalka, Yuri Malenchenko and Sergei Revin.

Fla. mom arrested for discarding infant in trash bin

By Karen Franklin, NBCMiami.com

Police in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., have arrested a mother they say discarded her infant son in a hotel trash bin after she told hospital staff she had had an abortion.

Alexandria Sladon-Marler, 33, was arrested Monday morning and faces charges including aggravated manslaughter and child neglect, according to authorities.

The incident began on Aug. 10 when police were contacted by emergency room workers at Broward General Medical Center who said Sladon-Marler told them she was experiencing symptoms from a recent pregnancy, police said.

Sladon-Marler told doctors she'd recently had an abortion and the symptoms were a result of the procedure, but a medical evaluation didn't support her story, police said.

Doctors told police Sladon-Marler had recently given birth but were unsure of the baby's whereabouts, police said.

When officers went to the Fort Lauderdale Beach Place Hotel and Suites, where Sladon-Marler had been transported from, they noticed an unusual amount of blood throughout her hotel room, police said.

The dead baby was later found "wrapped in a towel and placed inside of a pillowcase" in a trash bin at the hotel, according to a police report.

"They looked around the hotel room and they eventually went to the dumpster and located an infant boy," said Fort Lauderdale Police spokeswoman Detective DeAnna Garcia.

Sladon-Marler was being held Tuesday on $47,500 bond. It was unknown whether she has an attorney.
