Lying less linked to better health

ScienceDaily (Aug. 4, 2012) ? Telling the truth when tempted to lie can significantly improve a person's mental and physical health, according to a "Science of Honesty" study presented at the American Psychological Association's 120th Annual Convention.

"Recent evidence indicates that Americans average about 11 lies per week. We wanted to find out if living more honestly can actually cause better health," said lead author Anita E. Kelly, PhD, professor of psychology at the University of Notre Dame. "We found that the participants could purposefully and dramatically reduce their everyday lies, and that in turn was associated with significantly improved health."

Kelly and co-author Lijuan Wang, PhD, also of Notre Dame, conducted the honesty experiment over 10 weeks with a sample of 110 people, of whom 34 percent were adults in the community and 66 percent were college students. They ranged in age from 18 to 71 years, with an average age of 31. The just-completed study has not yet undergone peer review and has yet to be published.

Approximately half the participants were instructed to stop telling major and minor lies for the 10 weeks. The other half served as a control group that received no special instructions about lying. Both groups came to the laboratory each week to complete health and relationship measures and to take a polygraph test assessing the number of major and white lies they had told that week.

Over the course of 10 weeks, the link between less lying and improved health was significantly stronger for participants in the no-lie group, the study found. For example, when participants in the no-lie group told three fewer white lies than they did in other weeks, they experienced on average about four fewer mental-health complaints, such as feeling tense or melancholy, and about three fewer physical complaints, such as sore throats and headaches, the study found. In contrast, when control group members told three fewer white lies, they experienced two fewer mental-health complaints and about one less physical complaint. The pattern was similar for major lies, Kelly said.

Compared to the control group, participants in the more truthful group told significantly fewer lies across the 10-week study, and by the fifth week, they saw themselves as more honest, Kelly said. When participants across both groups lied less in a given week, they reported their physical health and mental health to be significantly better that week.

In weeks when participants told fewer lies, they reported that their close personal relationships had improved and that their social interactions overall had gone more smoothly that week, the study revealed. "Statistical analyses showed that this improvement in relationships significantly accounted for the improvement in health that was associated with less lying," said Wang, who is a statistician.

At the end of the 10 weeks, participants in the no-lie group described their efforts to keep from lying to others in their day-to-day interactions. Some said they realized they could simply tell the truth about their daily accomplishments rather than exaggerate, while others said they stopped making false excuses for being late or failing to complete tasks, Kelly said. Others said that they learned to avoid lying by responding to a troubling question with another question to distract the person, she said.

The study sample was 63 percent women, 87 percent white, 4 percent black, 4 percent Hispanic, 3 percent Asian-American and 2 percent of another race. Annual family income for the participants was fairly evenly distributed over a range of less than $25,000 to more than $160,000.

Because the findings are new they will be submitted for scientific review and publication later this year, Kelly said.

The "Science of Honesty" project was supported by a grant from the John Templeton Foundation.

Wall Street climbs at open on euro zone optimism

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks were set to tick higher at the open on Monday as international creditors made progress following a visit to Greece, adding to last week's plans from the European Central Bank to lower borrowing costs in Spain and Italy.

The euro was flat after recent steep gains against the U.S. dollar as caution remained about how effective the action pledged by the ECB would be.

Inspectors from the International Monetary Fund, the European Commission and the ECB concluded a visit to Greece on Sunday saying the talks with the new coalition government were productive.

Wall Street rallied on Friday to its highest level since early May on a strong U.S. jobs report and renewed hope European authorities would act to contain the euro zone debt crisis through ECB purchases of Italian and Spanish bonds.

The tick up in futures is a spillover of last week's bullish news from the ECB and the strong U.S. payrolls report, according to Fred Dickson, chief market strategist at D.A. Davidson & Co in Lake Oswego, Oregon.

"It's follow-through with a little bit of relief that (ECB President Mario) Draghi's remarks point to at least a work-around for Europe."

"People are more encouraged the economic slowdown in the U.S. may have reached a plateau," he added, regarding Friday's payrolls report.

A group of investors will rescue embattled market maker Knight Capital Group Inc in a $400 million deal that keeps the company in business, Knight said on Monday, but comes at a huge cost to investors. Knight shares fell roughly 30 percent in premarket trading.

S&P 500 futures rose 3 points and were above fair value, a formula that evaluates pricing by taking into account interest rates, dividends and time to expiration on the contract. Dow Jones industrial average futures rose 15 points, and Nasdaq 100 futures added 11.5 points.

Best Buy shares jumped 25 percent premarket after founder and former Chairman Richard Schulze offered to buy the shares he does not already own in the electronics retailer for $24 to $26 each.

Cognizant Technology Solutions Corp shares rose more than 10 percent premarket after the information technology services provider raised its full-year adjusted profit forecast.

Las Vegas Sands shares fell 1.5 percent premarket. The Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday the casino operator is the target of a federal investigation into possible violations of money-laundering laws.

Travel and leisure trips of a lifetime: Simple Tips For Choosing The ...

Renting a vacation home is ideal for family vacations. With ample space, amenities and conveniences that you cannot find in hotels it can make your holiday truly memorable. Unfortunately, choosing the wrong accommodation can make it a complete disaster. In fact, most people's worse holiday experiences come from bad accommodation and sometime opting for the cheapest solutions will backfire and make your holiday a real nightmare.

One of the advantages of staying in a hotel is that if anything is not to your liking you can just walk down and talk to the manager. In a holiday home you have to deal with whatever is thrown your way. Its crucial that you do your home work and make sure that you know exactly what you are in for.

Here are a few great tips to help you find a really good vacation home that will suit both your budget and your creature comforts...

- Photographs

Most of us will pick a holiday home based on the photographs we see - either online or in a brochure. The problem with this is that many photos are deceiving - especially online. Interior shots are either shots of when the place was new and views are often "general views" instead of specific views. Its really important that you ask for recent photographs and that you phone up the owner or agent and ask about it. It can be a nasty surprise once you get there.

- Location

Location is really important. Vacation homes are usually priced on size and location and you need to make sure that you are still close to everything you want to be close to. You don''t want to be a 20 mile drive away from the beach if you are going on a beach vacation. Use Google Earth to check out the place and check out the surroundings.

This is not a Speed-Reading?Contest!

??? ???? ?????? ??????

The Quraan was revealed for three main purposes:

First, to worship Allah with it by reciting it.

Second, to reflect over its meanings.

Third, to learn lessons from it.

?

Allah said:

??(This is) a book that We have sent down to you full of blessings, that they may ponder over its verses and that men of understanding may remember.?

[Surat Saad, 38:29]

It is impossible for anyone to take a reminder from the Quraan unless he knows the meaning because someone who does not know the meaning is at the same level as someone who does not even read (it), as Allah says:

??And from them are illiterates who do not know anything of the book except amaaniyy??

[Surat'l Baqarah, 2:78]

??except amaaniyy? here means ?except mere reading (without understanding the meanings)?.

For this, it is incumbent upon the Muslims to be persistent in seeking to learn the meanings of the Noble Quraan. In this was, he will gain benefit of it and likewise will be following in the footsteps of the Salaf (the pious predecessors). They used to not go beyond ten verses until they fully learned them (as recorded by Ibn Jareer in his tafseer, 1/80), and what they contain of knowledge and action.
